THE ORANGERY, KEW GARDENS, LONDON~~THE ORANGERY - The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew: London 1761
Click here to view a large image
The Orangery was designed by Sir William Chambers and completed in 1761. (He later went on to design many great buildings, including Somerset House, which we have also modelled). It is the largest classical style building in the gardens and was once the largest glass house in England! As its name suggests, The Orangery was designed to house orange trees, but alas, mainly due to poor light levels, it was never a success. The building has been used for many purposes in its life and since its latest restoration in 2002 it is now the setting for an elegant café-restaurant. The model is made of plaster and the detail shows Princess Augusta's coat of arms over the central bay of the facade, along with the Royal Arms and escutcheons with the monogram 'A' in honour of Queen Adelaide, wife of William IV.

The left-hand bay of the model is replicated in real life on both the left and right hand sides of the building forming a total of seven large North facing studio rooms. Various devices were repeatedly used by Mackintosh in the building, among them Japanese shield designs on the front fence and projecting ladder spikes from which the window cleaners worked. The building is meticulously detailed, as is the model.

West Library Tower “Nouveau” - 1909

The Glasgow School of Art is the masterwork of the architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The West Library Tower is part of the main school and is startlingly modern despite being designed at the turn of the 20th century.
In his design Charles Rennie Mackintosh captures Scotland's ancient past as well as predicting forms of the future. The building is a celebrated landmark building of international importance, far ahead of its time and of great influence on the development of modern architecture.
The tower contains the lecture theatre below and the double-floored library above. It overlooks Glasgow's famous Sauchiehall Street. The building shows many characteristics of the Art Nouveau style, one that spread throughout Europe and influenced many American architects.

The model shows the first purpose built tyre fitting garage, built in England by the innovative Michelin brothers. At this time there was a great upsurge of interest in the new fashion for motoring and Michelin were very keen to catch a major part of the tyre market. Their new building designed by chief engineer, Franscios Espinasse, was a great hit with the public. The character of Bibendum dominates the garage. The bon viveur and gastronomic hero is shown on all three sides.
This is a wonderful model for all those who love motoring or indeed eating. The Garage was saved and renovated by the designer Sir Terence Conran in the 1980's.
