This is a detail from the West Library Tower that is also featured in the catalogue. From the recessed keystone to the intricate stepped block-work Charles Rennie Mackintosh's West Door shows great originality in its composition. Its monumental structure resembles a fortress and yet it also has a modern feel. Work such as this has influenced a whole generation of architects. Because of his links with Europe, and specifically Germany, Mackintosh became distrusted and isolated by Britain and was given little work after 1920.
Only in the latter part of this century has Charles Rennie Mackintosh's great originality and contribution to the course of architecture as well as interior design been recognised.
