The Octagon - 1799 - New York Avenue NW, Washington DC


This special one off model and plinth were commissioned to celebrate the legacy of Norman L Koonce, by the American Institute of Architects in 2005. Mr Koonce was the Executive Vice President and CEO of the AIA. The model was presented to him in December 2005 on the occasion of his retirement.

The Octagon building itself was commissioned by Colonel John Tayloe III in the late C18th. The architect and builder was Dr. William Thornton, 1st architect of the US Capitol. The building was constructed between 1799 & 1801.

Today the Octagon is the home of the American Architectural Foundation and is the oldest museum in the United States devoted to architecture and design.
